    Please Help Japan 2011

    Posted: 18 Mar 2011 10:41 AM PDT

Hello everyone, for those who has just joined 10Steps.SG, my name is Johnson Koh.

7 days ago, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 hit Japan. This was followed by a Tsunami of about 10 meters which entirely wiped out towns off the map. The death toll stands at 413 confirmed dead, 784 missing and 1128 injured. Figures are predicted to increase.

    I love Japan

My design influences mostly come from the Japanese artworks. Japan also given me fond memories during my honeymoon in 2008. Those beautiful sceneries I shot in Hokkaido and Tokyo back then had now turned so differently overnight. Everything was destroyed and flattened.

    Ways You Can Help

This article is not written for any promotion or marketing purposes. I just hope to spread the word on helping the needy. A simple donation will support the Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS) disaster relief efforts to help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Funds will be utilised for the on-going provision of immediate relief and for eventual recovery support to the affected population. Here are some of the sites that you can donate to help:

  • International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)
  • Japanese Red Cross Society (JRCS)
  • Singapore Red Cross Society (for my fellow Singaporeans)
  • The Japanese people have demonstrated their resolve for supporting vulnerable people around the globe, as the world's attention now focuses on Japan we stand with them in solidarity.

    Thank you.

    The Birth of the Blog

The daily entries in diaries of personal accounts in peoples' lives have branched out into online entries for public consumption called blogs. Since its inception, blogging has exploded on the online social scene serving numerous purposes. In addition to personal entries, blogs now include posts on countless subjects such as travel, fashion, education, political opinions and commentary and general news items.

The word "blog" is an abbreviated version of the words "web log". Blogs are usually displayed in reverse chronological order and older articles are regularly archived. Bloggers create a website for descriptive posts, adding innovative touches with music, artwork, photographs, graphics, videos and links to other blogs and sites. Interaction is encouraged when readers post comments.

Examining the True Importance and Purpose of Blogs

Blogging presents the unique opportunity to shape ideas and keep audiences in touch with particular events or situations by giving running accounts of specific thoughts and activities. While there's freedom of speech in blogging that permits bloggers to reach out and express their innermost feelings without fear of reprisals, they must be careful not to produce defamatory or sensitive articles for which they could be held liable. Therefore, all bloggers should self-regulate their entries by choosing subjects wisely and commenting with respect on all issues.

When blogs are a source of news, they must differentiate from what could be personal opinion or gossip and what's a legitimate form of information that brings key information to light. Blogs are informational so blog sites should be updated regularly with new and interesting information.

    The Benefits of Blogging

Blogging reaps numerous benefits. Corporation blogs are used internally to enhance communication between employees, or externally for marketing or public relations purposes. Organizational blogs provide information and updates on certain groups. Genre blogs inform about different subjects such as news, cooking or music.

No matter what the purpose, the true intent of blogs is to inspire repeat visits to the site to draw an audience first, and a following thereafter. Blogging permits bloggers to become writer and publisher as they create works that reflect their own perspectives. Blogs can connect people of different cultures and locales by permitting them to interact while learning and sharing ideas on various subjects. Blogs can also aid in the transaction of business by using advertisements, links and good content to promote products and merchandise.

    Blog Publishing Applications

Blogging software programs are a type of Content Management Software that's specifically designed to create and maintain blogging websites. In order to run a blog, bloggers need a combination of a web hosting solution that sets up the platform or foundation for the blog site to run on, and a blog publishing application (or blogging tool) for site management. Blog publishing applications come in two categories: self-hosted software that allows the blogger to manage all the technical logistics, and third-party hosted software that puts control and management of the blog in the hands of a third party. Both versions are available for a fee or for free.

FatCow is an example of a web hosting provider that's a favorite among many because of the many web hosting features they offer for extremely cost-effective pricing. Examples of free third-party blog publishing applications are WordPress.com and Blogger. Examples of free self-hosted blog publishing applications are WordPress.org and Greymatter. Movable Type, BlogHarbor, TypePad and SquareSpace are examples of self-hosted blogging applications that are available for a fee.

Web Hosting Providers and Blog Publishing Applications

Choosing the best web hosting providers and blog publishing applications depends entirely on the bloggers' needs and position. If they wish to maintain complete control over their websites, they should choose a self-hosted application. If the blogger only wants to be involved with composing the content, they should choose a third-party publishing application. Of course, "to pay or not to pay" means if there isn't much money, then consider the free sites. If money isn't an issue, then all the sites should be checked for the one that best suits the blogger's needs.

    WordPress Hosting Providers

The top five web hosting solutions that include free set up and free domain for reasonably low monthly fees are iPage, InMotion, JustHost, FatCow and Web Hosting Hub. Each of these hosting providers offer unlimited disk space and each have received rave reviews.
